Twenty-Three-Year-Old Om Satija Becomes Youngest Person To Run Length Of India
Indo-Australian athlete Om Satija completes a historic 5000-kilometre run across India to raise funds for leprosy-affected children.
Srinagar: Breaking records and barriers with every stride, 23-year-old Indo-Australian athlete Om Satija has officially become the youngest person to run the entire length of India. The Melbourne-based endurance runner and trained physiotherapist recently concluded his monumental 5,000-kilometre "One India Run" right here in Srinagar, completing the gruelling cross-country odyssey in 110 relentless days.
Satija kicked off his historic journey at the southern tip of the subcontinent in Kanyakumari on Republic Day. Maintaining a punishing average pace of nearly 50 kilometres per day, his unique route traced up along the vast east coast before cutting through the heart of northern India. The final, emotionally charged stretch culminated at lakeside Zabarwan Park, sealing a feat of physical fortitude unmatched by anyone his age. Yet, for Satija, the extreme physical toll was secondary to a much larger societal mission.
The marathon campaign was launched to raise 60 lakh Indian rupees for the Udayan Foundation in Kolkata, a charity providing education, healthcare, and dignity to children from marginalized communities heavily impacted by leprosy. Reflecting on his motivation, Satija recalled a childhood visit to Rishikesh where he first witnessed the harsh realities and deep social stigma surrounding the curable disease. By turning his physical discomfort into a vehicle for advocacy, his run successfully generated 20 lakh Indian rupees in public contributions while igniting vital conversations about inclusion across thirteen states.
Beyond the fundraising triumph, the young athlete hopes his journey serves as a powerful wake-up call for India's youth to steer clear of negative influences, embrace physical fitness, and understand that consistency and discipline can solve even the most deeply entrenched societal challenges.
