Supreme Court Fines Comedian Samay Raina For Violating Directives On Inclusive Content

New Delhi : The Supreme Court of India has imposed a significant financial penalty on stand-up comedian and YouTuber Samay Raina for failing to comply with court-mandated directives. A Bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V.

Mohana, expressed strong dissatisfaction, stating that Raina had "taken the court for a ride" by brazenly violating previous orders.

 The legal proceedings stem from a petition filed by the Cure SMA India Foundation, which accused Raina of making insensitive remarks regarding the high cost of treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy and ridiculing persons with disabilities during his shows. In a prior directive, the Court had instructed Raina and other comedians to host at least two events monthly to raise funds for the treatment of persons with disabilities and to actively include specially-abled individuals in their programs.  

During the recent hearing, Senior Advocate Aparajita Singh, representing the petitioner, informed the Court that Raina had failed to fulfill these obligations, specifically noting that he had not invited any disabled persons to participate in his shows as previously ordered.

The Court further noted that an affidavit filed by Raina was misleading, as it contained claims not supported by the record.  Describing Raina and other involved figures as "self-styled youth icons," the Bench emphasized that they must respect the sentiments of society and adhere to legal mandates.

While some reports mentioned a ₹10 lakh fine, other legal sources have clarified the specific penalty amount involved in this non-compliance matter. The Court's order serves as a stern reminder of the accountability expected from digital content creators when addressing sensitive societal issues.
