Max Hospital Lucknow Performs Advanced Endoscopic Heart Surgery on High-Risk Patient

Lucknow : Cardiac surgeons at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow, have successfully performed a high-precision Endoscopic Mitral Valve Replacement on a 51-year-old, 100 kg man suffering from severe rheumatic mitral valve disease, pulmonary hypertension, and a previous history of stroke. The complex, minimally invasive procedure restored normal blood flow to the heart without requiring a traditional open-chest approach.

The patient, Mr. Arif Mohammad, a resident of Malihabad near Lucknow who works in Saudi Arabia, had been experiencing worsening breathlessness, persistent fatigue, palpitations, and leg swelling. As his condition severely restricted his daily routine, he returned to India for advanced medical intervention.

Given his high-risk clinical background, the multidisciplinary cardiology team selected an endoscopic approach. Unlike conventional open-heart surgery—which requires cutting through the sternum (breastbone)—endoscopic mitral valve replacement allows surgeons to access and replace the damaged heart valve through small incisions between the ribs.

The surgery was led by Dr. Vijayant Devenraj, Senior Director & Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, along with his surgical team. The patient experienced a smooth, uneventful recovery and was discharged in stable condition on the fifth post-operative day. Having regained his strength within two weeks, he is set to return to Saudi Arabia to resume his employment.

Dr. Vijayant Devenraj highlighted that endoscopic valve replacement significantly minimizes surgical trauma, reduces post-operative pain, lowers infection risks, and drastically accelerates recovery times.
