40-Year-Old Saved at Prayagraj Hospital After Doctors Remove 37 Kidney Stones in High-Risk Surgery

Prayagraj : Physicians from the Urology Department of Swarup Rani Nehru Hospital performed a complex operation and successfully removed 37 stones from the left kidney of a 40-year-old patient. Large stones, ranging from 4.5 to 6 centimeters in size, in both kidneys had caused severe infection (sepsis) and kidney failure.

His serum creatinine was 4.2 at the time of the operation.Shatrughan, a resident of Panasi village in Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh, had been suffering from kidney stones for about a year. According to family members, he had been taking homeopathic and Ayurvedic treatments to dissolve the stones.

His condition became critical after fever and breathing problems increased for about a month. Upon reaching the hospital, he was admitted to the ICU and put on ventilator support. He underwent hemodialysis while on the ventilator for three days. After his condition improved, he was put on maintenance dialysis.

Due to the presence of large stones in both kidneys, the urology team decided to operate on the left kidney first. Anatrophic Pyelolithotomy was performed on Friday, August 21, in the PMSSY Urology Operation Theatre. This complex procedure involved controlling the kidney opening and removing all 37 stones one by one.

The kidney was then repaired and a 5/26 double-J (DJ) stent was inserted. The renal artery was clamped for approximately 20 minutes during the operation.The urology team was led by Department Head, Prof. Dr. Dilip Chaurasia. He was joined by Dr. Shirish Mishra and Dr. Gajendra. The anesthesia team included Dr. Dharmendra Yadav, Dr. Pragati Saxena, Dr. Archi Singh, Dr. Kamal, and Dr. Shivmohan. The operation was challenging in a critical condition: Prof. Dr. Dilip Chaurasia - Head of the Urology Department, Prof. Dr. Dilip Chaurasia, said that the patient came to the hospital in a critical condition of sepsis and kidney failure. He required a ventilator and dialysis.

There were large stones of 4.5 to 6 cm in both the kidneys and the serum creatinine was 4.2 at the time of the operation. In such a situation, performing the operation was challenging. After the patient's condition improved, it was decided to operate on the left kidney first. The kidney was repaired by removing all 37 stones through anatrophic pyelolithotomy.

The patient's condition is being continuously monitored.What is anatrophic pyelolithotomy? Anatrophic pyelolithotomy is a complex surgical procedure used in selected cases to remove very large or multiple kidney stones. It involves carefully opening the kidney, removing the stones, and then repairing the kidney. This patient had 37 stones removed from his left kidney in a single operation.
