Medanta Lucknow Reaches Milestone of 100 Successful Liver Transplants
Medanta Lucknow completes 100 liver transplants, establishing regional leadership in central and eastern UP with advanced pediatric, robotic, and acute liver failure procedures.
Lucknow : Medanta Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow, announced the successful completion of its 100th liver transplant. This achievement marks the highest number of liver transplants performed by a single medical center in central and eastern Uttar Pradesh, providing accessible advanced surgical care to patients across the region.
Addressing the milestone, Dr. A.S. Soin, Chairman and Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon, highlighted that local availability of state-of-the-art transplant facilities eliminates the need for patients to travel out of state for critical surgical procedures.
The program has treated a wide demographic, with patient ages ranging from 3 years to 66 years—representing both the youngest and oldest liver transplant recipients in central and eastern UP.
Key highlights of the program's outcomes and technical advancements include:
Geographic & Demographics: According to Senior Director Dr. Prashant Bhangui, patients were drawn across the state, including Lucknow (30), Gorakhpur (16), Varanasi, Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Kanpur, Unnao, and Mathura. The hospital also completed a liver transplant for a patient from Yemen, marking the region's first international transplant success.
Complex Conditions & Acute Failure: Dr. Abhai Verma and Dr. Durga Prasad noted that transplants treated conditions including liver cancer, hepatitis B and C, and acute liver failure (14% of cases). Advanced therapies such as TARE, TACE, PET CT, and radiotherapy were integrated into oncology protocols.
Robotic Donor Surgeries: Senior Consultant Dr. Kamal Yadav reported that over 17 living-donor liver retrievals were performed using robotic technology, minimizing scarring, post-operative pain, and recovery times.
Etiology & Prevention: Dr. Vivek Gupta shared that alcohol abuse (26%) and Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD/fatty liver, 24%) were the primary causes of liver failure, pointing to lifestyle management as a critical preventive measure.
Living Donors: Spouses constituted the largest group of living donors (42%), followed by adult children (22%), siblings (14%), and parents (10%).
