Tata Motors Upgrades Premium Avinya EV Lineup With Chery-JLR Freelander Electric Architecture

Mumbai:Tata Motors has announced a significant technological upgrade for its upcoming premium electric vehicle (EV) flagship brand, Avinya. In a strategic pivot to accelerate deployment, the Indian automotive giant confirmed that the Avinya range will now utilize the highly advanced "Freelander" EV platform, developed through the Chery-Jaguar Land Rover (CJLR) joint venture.

The decision marks a major departure from Tata’s original roadmap, which initially intended to anchor the premium lineup on JLR’s expensive Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA). However, adapting the EMA architecture posed severe cost viability challenges relative to the project’s intended commercial scale and market positioning. By shifting to the flexible and cost-competitive Freelander platform, Tata Motors gains instant access to a mature, high-performance electric ecosystem that dramatically shortens R&D timelines.

The first production vehicle to arise from this platform upgrade will be the Avinya X—internally codenamed the P2 programme—a premium five-seat coupe-styled SUV. Engineering prototypes are slated for testing later this year, with a official market debut finalized for 2027. Production will take place at Tata’s state-of-the-art, newly opened manufacturing facility in Panapakkam, Tamil Nadu.

Vehicles built on the scalable Freelander architecture will target the 30 lakh to 40 lakh Indian rupee segment, bridging the gap between mass-market passenger EVs and high-end luxury imports. Armed with battery packs ranging from 65 to 80 kilowatt-hours (kWh), the production models are engineered to comfortably deliver a driving range exceeding 500 kilometers on a single charge.

While the exterior aesthetics and final integration will remain deeply rooted in Tata's signature design philosophy, the underlying Chinese-linked powertrain and software structure ensure that Avinya rolls out with cutting-edge global competitiveness.
