Large rocks suddenly fell from a hillside near Shimla’s Dhalli vegetable market, damaging several vehicles and triggering panic, while no major casualties were reported
Shimla: Panic broke out at Shimla’s Dhalli vegetable market on Thursday after large rocks suddenly came crashing down from the hillside, hitting several vehicles parked along the road and nearby parking area.
According to preliminary information, the rockfall occurred in the area opposite the Dhalli vegetable market. Large stones began rolling down the hillside without warning and landed on the road and vehicles parked alongside it.
The sound of the falling rocks startled people in the area, prompting them to rush towards safer locations. Several vehicles were caught in the path of the falling debris and sustained damage.
Fortunately, people managed to move away from the vulnerable area in time, and no major loss of life or serious injuries have been reported so far. Following the incident, vehicle owners also began moving their vehicles away from the affected spot.
The sudden rockfall created a tense situation at the market for some time. Local residents and vehicle owners are now concerned about the continued risk of falling rocks from the hillside, particularly during the monsoon season.
Residents pointed out that heavy rainfall can increase the risk of landslides and rockfalls in hilly areas. They have urged the administration to conduct a detailed inspection of the slopes surrounding Dhalli vegetable market and identify vulnerable locations.
They have also called for immediate safety measures at potentially dangerous spots to prevent further incidents and protect commuters, pedestrians and parked vehicles.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by residents and motorists in Shimla’s vulnerable hill areas during the rainy season.
