UNSC, India Exposes Rights Abuses in PoK, Urges Peaceful Conflict Resolution

New York : India reiterated its commitment to global peace and security at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) while delivering a sharp critique of Pakistan's human rights record in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK).

Speaking at the high-level open debate on strengthening mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes, Ambassador P. Harish, Permanent Representative of India to the UN, emphasized dialogue, mediation, and diplomacy under the UN Charter.

In a decisive diplomatic response, Ambassador Harish exposed the ongoing repression in PoK, stating on X that the world has witnessed the persistent suppression of fundamental rights, freedom of expression, and association in the region. He noted that these abuses are not isolated incidents, but part of a systematic plan by Pakistani authorities spanning nearly eight decades.

Harish also criticized Pakistan's internal political climate, highlighting the imprisonment of leaders—including a former Prime Minister—and constitutional maneuvers that undermine democracy. He advised Pakistan to focus on its pressing domestic issues rather than spreading false narratives and misusing religious symbols to mislead UN members. Reaffirming India's role as a founding UN member, he expressed readiness to work with the global body to fulfill its core mandate.

Following the UNSC debate, Ambassador Harish addressed the plenary session on Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). He highlighted digital technology as a game-changer for the Global South and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), showcasing India’s successful Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and the 'India Stack' model as examples of inclusive digital empowerment.
