President Murmu’s Historic Romania Visit Marks New Era in Trade and Tech Ties

Bucharest : Marking the first state visit by an Indian Head of State to Romania in nearly three decades, President Droupadi Murmu held comprehensive bilateral discussions with Romanian President Nicușor Dan and Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan in Bucharest. The high-level meetings focused on bolstering ties across trade, investment, defense, renewable energy, and education.

Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, confirmed on X that President Murmu and President Dan reviewed all aspects of bilateral cooperation. The two nations signed key Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in the fields of science and technology, sports, and culture. In a separate meeting with Prime Minister Bolojan, discussions centered on expanding trade, clean energy initiatives, regional connectivity, and emerging technologies.

Addressing the India-Romania Business Forum, President Murmu highlighted India’s transformative journey toward 'Viksit Bharat 2047'—the vision to become a developed nation by its centenary of independence. She emphasized India’s world-class Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), thriving startup ecosystem, and global IT leadership, noting that aligning India’s digital expertise with Romania's technological strengths presents a powerful strategic opportunity.

To commemorate the milestone, both nations agreed to observe 2028—the 80th anniversary of their diplomatic relations—as the "India-Romania Year of Innovation." President Murmu’s historic visit adds a momentous chapter to bilateral relations, significantly reinforcing India's economic and strategic footprint in Eastern Europe.
