Putin Invites India Back to Su-57 Fighter Jet Project
Russian President Vladimir Putin offers India a renewed partnership on the Su-57 stealth fighter, recalling New Delhi's 2018 FGFA exit.
Mosscow : Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced Moscow's readiness to revive defense collaboration with India on the Sukhoi Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet program. Speaking to global media, Putin highlighted Russia’s willingness to jointly develop, produce, and share critical technology for the advanced stealth platform without any structural limitations.
The proposal arrives at a critical juncture for the Indian Air Force (IAF), which currently lacks a fifth-generation stealth aircraft. This capability gap has widened as regional neighbors rapidly advance their aerial fleets. While India is actively pursuing its indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), the platform is not projected to enter active operational service until the mid-2030s.
The offer has brought renewed attention to India's dramatic 2018 exit from the co-development venture, then known as the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) program. Initiated in 2007, the multi-billion-dollar joint initiative unraveled after years of steep cost overruns, persistent developmental delays, and deep disagreements over technology transfer.
The IAF ultimately rejected the platform due to critical technical shortfalls. Indian defense officials expressed significant dissatisfaction with the prototype's stealth profile, noting that its radar cross-section and heat signatures failed to meet true fifth-generation standards. Additionally, the promised high-performance Saturn AL-41F1 engines were severely delayed, prompting Russia to suggest temporary legacy systems instead. Disagreements over work-share equity and a push for domestic manufacturing under the "Make in India" initiative ultimately sealed the project's cancellation.
