Because the effects typically appear after fertilisation rather than before it, a healthy egg may be fertilised but fail to implant, or the pregnancy may not hold through the first few weeks, without the underlying cause ever being looked at.

What research and treatment options tell us : Research has found that progesterone support during the luteal phase improved pregnancy outcomes in women with unexplained infertility, reinforcing what is increasingly understood about this hormone's role in early pregnancy stability. The encouraging part is that it responds well to treatment once identified. Blood tests and ovulation monitoring can establish where levels stand and if a deficiency is confirmed, supplementation alongside addressing any underlying hormonal imbalances can meaningfully improve the chances of a successful pregnancy.

Many women with progesterone deficiency do go on to have healthy pregnancies, but that outcome usually begins with the right diagnosis at the right time.
