Himachal Pradesh to Kick off Digital Census: Online Self-Enumeration Starts August 17

Shimla : The Union Government has issued an official gazette notification scheduling the headcounts for snowbound and non-synchronous regions across Himachal Pradesh, Union Territory of Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand. Marking a major technological transition, this census will feature digital data collection alongside a first-of-its-kind online self-enumeration portal, allowing citizens to submit their family details directly from home before official enumerators conduct door-to-door verification.

Key Census Timeline for Snowbound Regions
Due to heavy winter snowfalls that severely disrupt road connectivity in high-altitude zones, administrative timelines have been specially adjusted to ensure comprehensive coverage:

Online Self-Enumeration: August 17 to August 31, 2026.

Field Population Enumeration: September 1 to September 30, 2026.

Revision Round & Error Correction: October 1 to October 5, 2026.

Districts covered under this phase in Himachal Pradesh include snowbound parts of Shimla, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kullu, Mandi, and Sirmaur. Individuals present in these areas during the field survey period will be recorded as residents of their respective locations.

Ministry of Home Affairs officials emphasized that integrating digital tools and online self-enumeration will enhance operational transparency, accuracy, and processing speed. Beyond headcount statistics, census data forms the structural foundation for policy formulation across key sectors, including public health, educational infrastructure, housing, drinking water, rural development, social welfare schemes, and delimitation of electoral constituencies.
