Delhi Police Probe Reveals Offline Bluetooth Mesh Applications Used By Protesters Without Internet

New Delhi : In a major revelation surrounding the recent violent clashes during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) demonstrations in central Delhi, a technical probe by the Delhi Police has uncovered the widespread use of offline, peer-to-peer messaging applications among protesters. The specialized software permitted demonstrators to coordinate group movements and send encrypted messages even after local mobile internet and cellular data services were disrupted.

According to cyber cell investigators, these applications—such as Bitchat and Briar—operate entirely without mobile towers, Wi-Fi routers, central servers, or phone number registrations. Instead, they leverage Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology built into modern smartphones to establish localized mesh networks. When a user sends a text or broadcast alert, the encrypted data hops wirelessly from one nearby smartphone to another running the same software. Each device acts as an anonymous relay node, expanding the communication range as crowd density increases.

Analysis of recovered group chats indicates that organizers advised participants prior to the march to download identical mesh applications to circumvent potential police network jammers. Demonstrators used the technology to share real-time warnings about police barricades, coordinate protest routes, and maintain group contact in digital silence.

Law enforcement agencies noted that tracking or intercepting communications on these decentralized mesh platforms presents significant technical hurdles. Because the software does not generate standard Internet Protocol (IP) detail records or route data through telecom gateways, traditional digital wiretapping tactics remain ineffective. Delhi Police cyber experts and anti-terror units are currently combining forensic phone examinations with facial recognition technology and CCTV surveillance to identify key organizers and reconstruct the sequence of events.
