Monsoon Hits Kerala Cost Triggering Heavy Rain Warnings Across Vulnerable Southern States
The southwest monsoon officially arrives in India as forecasters issue severe weather alerts for Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi-NCR
Thiruvananthapurm:The India Meteorological Department (IMD) officially confirmed the arrival of the southwest monsoon on Thursday, bringing vital relief to the subcontinent after a brief delay. Sweeping across the southern tip of the country, the weather system has quickly advanced into the remaining pockets of the Arabian Sea, the entire Lakshadweep archipelago, and prominent stretches of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The monsoon's arrival has triggered immediate meteorological warnings. Heavy, continuous rainfall lashed multiple southern districts since Wednesday night, prompting the IMD to issue a localized orange alert for Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam. Strong surface winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour, alongside intense thunderstorms, are expected to persist across the region over the coming week.
Neighboring Tamil Nadu is also on high alert for isolated heavy downpours as the system expands its footprint over the Bay of Bengal. Concurrently, a separate, active convective system has gripped northern India, prompting an orange alert for the national capital territory of Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR).
Forecasters warn of severe thunderstorms, frequent lightning strikes, and damaging gusty winds peaking at 40 kilometers per hour. This turbulent pre-monsoon activity is expected to drastically drop ambient temperatures, providing citizens with much-needed respite from an intense summer heatwave.
As the country enters the four-month rainy season, agricultural planners are monitoring the situation closely. While the initial onset has been robust, the IMD has cautiously projected overall seasonal rainfall to settle at 90 percent of the Long Period Average (LPA), placing it on the lower end of the normal spectrum. State administrations across vulnerable zones have activated emergency disaster response protocols to address potential urban flooding and localized waterlogging risks.
