India Hands Over 48 Homes in Sri Lanka Under 'Neighbourhood First' Housing Project

Colombo : Reinforcing its "Neighbourhood First" policy, India achieved another key milestone in supporting sustainable development and grassroots empowerment in Sri Lanka. Two newly constructed Model Villages—'Nanda Gama' in Kegalle district and 'Jana Aruna Gama' in Kalutara district—were officially inaugurated and handed over to local beneficiaries.

Built through grant assistance from the Government of India, the housing project was inaugurated by the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha. This initiative forms part of a broader scheme to construct durable housing for low-income families across all 25 districts of Sri Lanka, showcasing the enduring diplomatic and cultural bonds between the two nations.

High-Profile Inauguration
The event witnessed the presence of key Sri Lankan dignitaries, including Minister of Environment Dr. Dhammika Patabendi in Kegalle, along with Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa and Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Dr. Susil Ranasinghe in Kalutara.

Highlighting the impact of the initiative on social media platform X, High Commissioner Santosh Jha stated:

"Providing homes, transforming lives. Inaugurated 'Jana Aruna Gama', the 20th Model Village in Kalutara, along with Ministers Dr. Susil Ranasinghe and Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa. Built under Indian grant assistance across all 25 districts of Sri Lanka, this initiative reflects the strength of India-Sri Lanka friendship in making a real difference at the grassroots level."

Model Village Diplomacy
The Model Village Housing Project aims to provide not just shelter, but a complete upgrade to local living standards. Under this planned framework, each designated village features 24 fully constructed housing units equipped with modern amenities designed for economically vulnerable families.

India’s steady support under its "Neighbourhood First" vision has consistently addressed Sri Lanka's socio-economic priorities. From navigating recent economic crises to collaborating on digital infrastructure, healthcare, education, disaster management, and renewable energy, India continues to solidify its role as a trusted partner in the region.
