Shreyas Iyer Named India T20I Captain, Suryakumar Dropped For UK Tour

Mumbai:In a sensational overhaul of India’s short-format strategy, the national selection committee has named Shreyas Iyer as the new T20I captain for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England.

The blockbuster announcement marked the definitive end of Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy tenure, with the veteran batter not only stripped of leadership but completely dropped from the touring contingent following a severe dip in individual form.  Iyer’s promotion to the helm signals a structural reset by the BCCI, which is actively building toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics cycle.

The 31-year-old’s impeccable leadership resume in the IPL, including a championship victory with KKR and taking multiple franchises to finals, gave him the decisive edge over younger contenders. Rising star Tilak Varma has been designated as his vice-captain.  Simultaneously, the selection panel generated immense buzz by rewarding teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi with a maiden senior team call-up.

The explosive left-hander forced his way into the national squad following an extraordinary IPL 2026 campaign with the Rajasthan Royals, where he clinically shattered records to claim the Orange Cap. At just 15 years old, Sooryavanshi is poised to break Sachin Tendulkar's historic benchmark to become the youngest player ever to represent India internationally.  

While Varma will command the squad during the brief two-match opening series against Ireland in Belfast starting June 26, Iyer will take over active on-field leadership for the grueling five-match T20I series against England starting July 1. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar emphasized that the structural changes reflect a ruthless approach to long-term consistency, prioritizing dynamic form and tactical vision as the national team transitions into a new white-ball era.
