Max Hospital Lucknow Saves 19-Month-Old from Rare Double-Organ Crisis
Lucknow : In a medical feat that bridges international borders, surgeons at Max Super Specialty Hospital have granted a 19-month-old Nepalese boy a "new lease of life." The toddler arrived in Lucknow battling a perilous combination of rare congenital defects: a horseshoe kidney with bilateral blockages and a simultaneous gallbladder disorder.
The child was born with his kidneys fused into a U-shape, a condition further complicated by Bilateral Ureter Pelvic Junction Obstruction (UPJO). This blockage caused his kidneys to swell so severely that they occupied nearly his entire abdominal cavity, threatening imminent renal failure. Compounding the crisis, the infant also suffered from stones in both his gallbladder and common bile duct.
After being turned away by several centers due to his age and the surgery's complexity, the family sought refuge at Max Hospital’s specialized pediatric unit.
Precision was paramount. Dr. Rahul Yadav (Urology) and Dr. Ajay Yadav (Gastrosurgery) led a multidisciplinary team through a grueling four-hour marathon. To minimize trauma, the team utilized a "single-anesthetic, shared-port" strategy.
Kidney Repair: Laparoscopic surgery cleared the blockages and installed stents to restore urine flow.
Gallbladder Removal: Using the same entry points (ports) created for the kidney surgery, the gastro team removed the gallbladder, sparing the toddler additional incisions.
The surgical synergy paid off. The toddler was feeding within 12 hours and was discharged only four days later. Dr. M.U. Hasan noted that without this timely intervention, the child’s growth and survival were at grave risk. This successful outcome highlights Lucknow’s growing status as a hub for complex, minimally invasive pediatric care.
