Lucknow : Max Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow, hosted a ‘Heart Health Carnival’ in the hospital premises today, bringing together over 1000 participants from diverse sections of the community.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Nakul Sinha, Chairman, Cardiology, Cardiac Sciences, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow, said, “Historically, heart diseases, especially coronary artery disease, were thought to primarily affect the elderly only. However, this perspective has changed as advancements in detection and diagnosis reveal that heart conditions can affect individuals of all ages, including adolescents and young adults.

This disease has become much more evident, with its incidences and prevalence increasing significantly due to rising risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, smoking, and unhealthy lifestyle choices. Conditions such as heart attacks and even sudden deaths are becoming increasingly common in these populations. However, there are many more conditions that can affect the heart and lead to symptoms and associated problems.”

Dr. Nakul further said, “A reduction in the pumping efficiency of the heart for varied reasons can lead to the syndrome of heart failure, which can also occur with a preserved pumping function. This is due to a combination of many modern-day unhealthy practices, which increase blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugars, body weight, and lung problems. Indians also have a peculiar problem of increased visceral body fat despite not being very much overweight sometimes. This also has its negative connotations. There are also a few rare genetic / inherited conditions which can suddenly cause an abnormal rhythm of the heart, which can sometimes be fatal.”

Dr Ambukeshwar Singh, Associate Director & Unit Head, Interventional Cardiology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow, raised awareness to the audience about the lesser-known silent heart attack phenomenon, said, “While it's rare, it is possible to have a silent heart attack without experiencing typical symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breath. The incidence of such attacks ranges from 5% to 10% of all heart attacks, especially in Diabetics.”

Speaking about cardiovascular health, Prof. Dr. D. Prabhakaran, MD, DM (Cardiology), Executive Director, Centre for Chronic Disease Control (CCDC), said, "Environmental changes, particularly air pollution, are emerging as major contributors to the rising incidence of heart disease in India. Research conducted under the Centre for Chronic Disease Control has found that the high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases among Indians is due to a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors, with air pollution playing a significant role. Urbanization and malnutrition are also contributing to the growing burden of heart disease. In India, air pollution is responsible for 1.27 million deaths annually, half of which are related to cardiovascular diseases. It increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes by up to 48%.”

The event also featured an engaging Zumba session, a Skit on Heart Health, a Balloon Lift Ceremony, and free health checkup for the participants.  Health stalls offering guidance on heart-healthy nutrition. This World Heart Day fair was an incredibly informative and enjoyable event that successfully raised awareness about cardiac care and the initiatives taken by Max Super Specialty Hospital, Lucknow, to promote heart health.
