Bhumi Pednekar Hails OTT Revolution: "Women are Taking Bigger Script Risks"

Lucknow :  A decade into her transformative career, Bhumi Pednekar has credited the rise of streaming platforms for fundamentally dismantling the "predictability" of female roles in Indian cinema. Speaking at the International Film Festival Delhi 2026, the actress asserted that OTT has not just provided a space for women, but has empowered them to lead narratives that were once relegated to the sidelines.

The Shift from Supporting to Leading
Pednekar, known for her penchant for unconventional characters from Dum Laga Ke Haisha to the global success of Daldal, noted that the digital boom has finally met the courage of female performers halfway.

"Women have always been courageous and brave while choosing scripts," Bhumi shared. "OTT simply gives them the right platform to support that courage. The narrative has become significantly stronger because these shows and films are now being led by women."

A Message to the Next Generation
Reflecting on her ten-year journey, Bhumi addressed the lingering stigma surrounding the film industry. She urged aspiring actresses to look past the intimidation factor, stating that the environment is far more navigable than perceived.

  • On Safety: "It’s not as scary as it seems. Many women have become incredibly capable in this world."
  • On Persistence: "Many will say 'no,' but you must listen to that one 'yes' within you."
  • On Discernment: She emphasized that while experience teaches one to distinguish right from wrong, staying focused on the craft remains the ultimate safeguard.

When asked about handling industry criticism or being undermined, Bhumi’s strategy is rooted in performance rather than PR. She believes that for women in cinema, "actions speak louder than words." By channeling skepticism into her work, she continues to ignite nationwide conversations, proving that women-led stories are no longer the exception—they are the new industry norm.
