Eighth Indian LPG Tanker Successfully Transits Strait of Hormuz

New Delhi : In a significant boost to regional energy security, the Indian-flagged vessel Green Asha successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz this week. This marks the eighth Indian ship to transit the volatile waterway since tensions escalated on February 28, signaling a steady flow of essential commodities despite the shadow of conflict.

The transit follows the successful passage of the Green Sanvi last Friday, which carried approximately 46,650 metric tonnes of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). These movements are critical, as the Strait of Hormuz remains a primary chokepoint for global energy, responsible for the passage of nearly one-fifth of the world’s petroleum.

  • The safety of these vessels is not a matter of chance. The Indian government has deployed a dual-track strategy to protect its maritime interests:
  • Military Readiness: Indian Navy warships remain on high alert in the region, providing a protective umbrella for merchant vessels.
  • Diplomatic Assurance: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and EAM S. Jaishankar have maintained direct communication with Tehran.

Reflecting this diplomatic rapport, the Iranian Embassy in India recently issued a reassuring statement on social media, stating, “Our Indian friends are in safe hands,” aimed at cooling anxieties regarding potential disruptions.

The ripple effects of these successful transits are already being felt at home. On March 28, the MT Jag Vasant arrived at the Vadinar Terminal in Gujarat with 47,000 metric tonnes of LPG. The cargo is currently slated for a Ship-to-Ship (STS) transfer at anchorage, ensuring that India’s domestic energy supply remains insulated from Middle Eastern volatility.

As Iran continues to monitor "hostile" vessels in the region, India’s neutral yet proactive stance appears to be securing a "green channel" for its fleet, maintaining the vital heartbeat of its energy trade.
