Nalanda University Launches CSEAS: A New Era of India-Southeast Asia Knowledge Diplomacy

Rajgir : In a landmark move to strengthen regional integration, Nalanda University has officially inaugurated the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS). The center was unveiled by P. Kumaran, Secretary (East) of the Ministry of External Affairs, marking a pivotal step in India’s "Act East Policy."

The CSEAS is designed to serve as a premier knowledge partner for the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Plan of Action (2026-2030). The center will focus on ten interdisciplinary research pillars, including:

  • Climate & Maritime Studies
  • Digital Cooperation & Trade
  • Public Health & Migration
  • Heritage & International Relations

By fostering academic rigor and policy engagement, the center aims to revive the intellectual legacy of the ancient Nalanda ruins while addressing modern geopolitical challenges.

The inauguration coincided with the University’s 2nd Convocation, graced by President Droupadi Murmu and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.

Symbol of Peace: President Murmu planted a Sapling of the Bodhi Tree, symbolizing spiritual continuity.

Infrastructure: The President also inaugurated 'Vishwamitralaya', a state-of-the-art 2,000-seat auditorium.

Reflecting on the event, Dr. S. Jaishankar noted that the graduation of 600 students from 31 countries proves that "tradition and technology" can coexist as pillars of development.

The establishment of CSEAS fulfills a commitment made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 22nd ASEAN-India Summit in Kuala Lumpur in October 2025. Positioned near the historic ruins in Rajgir, the modern Nalanda University is now set to become a central hub for regional diplomacy and civilizational connectivity.
