Assam Elections 2026: PM Modi Connects with Tea Workers; BJP Pledges UCC and Massive Investment

Dibrugarh (Assam) : Stepping up the campaign for the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the lush tea estates of Dibrugarh on Wednesday. The visit, aimed at wooing one of the state's most influential voting blocs, saw the PM interacting closely with women tea pluckers, whom he described as the "backbone of Assam’s identity."

Taking to social media after the interaction, PM Modi remarked, “Tea is the soul of Assam! This morning in Dibrugarh, I spent time in a tea garden and interacted with the hardworking women there. It was a truly memorable experience.” The tea tribe community, numbering over 6 million, remains a pivotal factor in at least 40 assembly seats in Upper Assam.

Following the garden visit, the Prime Minister is set to address massive public gatherings in Gogamukh and Biswanath. He is campaigning for key candidates, including state ministers Ranoj Pegu and Naba Kumar Doley. To ensure the smooth conduct of these events, a massive security blanket involving Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and state police has been deployed across Dhemaji and Biswanath districts.

The visit comes just a day after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the BJP’s 'Sankalp Patra 2026'. The manifesto outlines 31 core promises, most notably:

Infrastructure: A ₹5 lakh crore investment plan to transform Assam into India's "Eastern Gateway."

Uniform Civil Code (UCC): Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that UCC will be implemented within three months of returning to power, specifically excluding tribal areas to protect ethnic rights.

Land Rights: A commitment to recover encroached land from "Bangladeshi Miyas" and protect the heritage of indigenous "Satras."

Wages: A pledge to increase tea garden workers' daily wages to ₹500.

With polling for the 126-member assembly scheduled for April 9, 2026, the Prime Minister’s visit signals a final, intensive push by the "double-engine" government to secure a historic third term.
