Allahabad University Scientists Secure Major National Grant to Combat Crop Diseases

Prayagraj : In a significant boost to agricultural science, the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) has greenlit a high-impact research project at the University of Allahabad. The study aims to dismantle the genetic mechanisms of bacterial pathogens that currently devastate Indian harvests.

Led by Dr. Rikky Rai from the Botany Department, the team—including Dr. Sunil Kumar Singh and Hyderabad-based expert Dr. Subhadeep Chatterjee—will utilize advanced genomics to decode how bacteria bypass plant defenses. By identifying the specific genetic triggers of vulnerability, the researchers hope to engineer "climate-smart" crops that are naturally resistant to infection.

Dr. Rai emphasized that the ultimate goal is to move away from chemical dependency. "We are looking for biological solutions that protect a farmer’s bottom line," he stated. The project is expected to pave the way for sustainable farming practices by reducing the need for toxic pesticides and ensuring more stable yields across the country.
