UP Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana Clarifies Controversial Ram Temple Donation Remark
UP Speaker Satish Mahana clarified that his controversial "lack of true devotion" remark targeted opposition leaders, not general devotees.
Lucknow: Seeking to quell a massive political storm, Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana clarified his controversial remarks concerning the high-profile Ayodhya Ram Temple donation theft case. Mahana asserted that his statement was directed solely at senior opposition leaders demanding refunds, rather than the general community of Hindu devotees.
The row erupted after a video surfaced online showing Mahana addressing the ongoing investigation. In the clip, he suggested that donors who believe their money was stolen "may not have offered it with genuine devotion," explaining why their money was vulnerable.
The remark drew fierce condemnation from the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP), who accused the Speaker of "auditing the faith" of common citizens and attempting to shield institutional failures.
Issuing a detailed clarification, Mahana explained that his comments specifically responded to senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh’s recent public demands to have his temple donations returned due to corruption concerns.
"When Digvijaya Singh said his money should be returned, I noted that money offered with genuine devotion is never sought back," Mahana explained. "It is highly unfortunate that those who historically opposed the Ram Janmabhoomi movement are now using a localized theft incident to malign the entire institution."
Mahana emphasized that he is not defending the criminals involved in the embezzlement, noting that the state-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) has already jailed eight suspects. He reiterated that the grand scale of the standing temple serves as absolute proof that the vast majority of public contributions were utilized transparently for its structural development.
