Himachal Government Partners With UNDP For Sustainable Climate-Resilient Ecology

Shimla:In a major step toward ecological preservation, the Himachal Pradesh government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to drive climate-resilient, inclusive, and sustainable development across the state.

The strategic pact was finalized in the presence of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Sushil Singla, Secretary of Environment, Science, Technology, and Climate Change, signed the document on behalf of the state administration, while Dr. Angela Lusigi, Resident Representative, endorsed it for the UNDP.

The broad-ranging partnership establishes a cooperative framework focusing heavily on the circular economy—revising waste management strategies, launching electric mobility initiatives for urban waste collection, and uplifting local informal sanitation sectors. Simultaneously, the agreement tackles natural resource management by deploying nature-based solutions, executing landscape restoration, and securing vulnerable Himalayan biodiversity corridors to ensure long-term climate adaptation.

"This collaboration enables us to integrate global environmental benchmarks with localized actions," Chief Minister Sukhu remarked during the event. "It perfectly matches our long-term vision of transforming Himachal Pradesh into a pioneering Green Energy State while generating green livelihoods for our people."Marking the collaboration's focus on social equity, the Chief Minister also launched the 'Safai Mitra Scheme,' a targeted program designed to structurally empower informal sanitation workers.

He noted that safeguarding the dignity, financial stability, and physical safety of waste workers remains fundamental to the state's environmental mission. By combining UNDP's technical expertise with localized state actions, the alliance will prioritize knowledge exchanges, local pilot projects, and the mobilization of international climate finance to accelerate the state's progress toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) amidst intensifying climate pressures.
