Delhi Traffic Police officials on duty receive AC-equipped helmets and fans to tackle heat
Delhi Traffic Police introduces hi-tech AC helmets and portable fans to shield on-duty personnel from extreme summer heatwaves.0
New Delhi : In a proactive move to safeguard its personnel from hazardous weather conditions, the traffic police department has launched a specialized initiative equipping on-duty officers with air-conditioned (AC) helmets and portable fans. The deployment comes as the region battles severe summer heatwaves, with temperatures consistently soaring past 45 degrees Celsius, making prolonged outdoor duties exceptionally challenging for traffic regulators.
The high-tech cooling gear has been distributed on a pilot basis across several major traffic junctions, including prominent roundabouts. The specialized AC helmets utilize a built-in fan and ventilation mechanism designed to regulate temperature, effectively reducing the internal heat around the officer's head by 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. Powered by a lightweight battery pack worn around the waist, these helmets can operate continuously for up to eight hours on a single charge, providing sustained relief during standard duty shifts.
Alongside the headgear, traffic personnel have also been provided with battery-operated portable collar fans, transparent protective goggles to block dust and solar glare, insulated water bottles, and oral rehydration salts (ORS) sachets. Officers on the ground report that the new equipment drastically lowers the risk of heat exhaustion and sunstrokes, making it significantly easier to manage congested arterial roads under the punishing sun.
Senior administrative officials stated that the ongoing trial seeks to scientifically evaluate the long-term comfort and health impacts of the gear on personnel. If the pilot project yields positive results, the department plans to scale up procurement to equip thousands of field officers. This tech-driven intervention reflects a growing focus on public safety welfare, ensuring that essential emergency workers remain protected while maintaining peak operational efficiency during climate extremes.
