Guarding the Global Workforce: Indian Missions Step Up Oversight for Migrant Workers

New Delhi : The Government of India has significantly strengthened its bilateral and multilateral frameworks to safeguard the interests of Indian laborers working abroad, particularly in high-migration corridors like the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations.

In a detailed briefing to the Rajya Sabha on March 12, 2026, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh highlighted the robust "Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreements" established to ensure the legal and safe movement of citizens. Responding to inquiries from MP Md. Nadimul Haque, the Minister showcased a stellar track record in resolving grievances related to wage theft, contract breaches, and passport confiscation.

Success by the Numbers: 2024-2025
The data presented reveals a high resolution rate for worker complaints across several nations, despite complex international legal hurdles:

100% Resolution: Countries like Cambodia (640 cases), Maldives (855), Uzbekistan (540), and Sri Lanka (172) saw every single complaint addressed in 2025.

High-Volume Corridors: In the UAE, 3,697 out of 4,138 issues were resolved. In Malaysia, an impressive 2,519 out of 2,532 problems were settled.

The GCC Focus: Substantial progress was noted in Saudi Arabia (2,325 resolved) and Oman (2,241 resolved), where missions remain on high alert to assist workers lacking technical skills or information.

India has institutionalized these protections by signing labor mobility agreements with diverse economies including Japan, Israel, Taiwan, and Mauritius. Furthermore, strategic partnerships with European nations like France, Germany, Italy, and the UK ensure that the Indian diaspora operates under protected, lawful conditions.

Minister Singh reaffirmed that Indian Missions remain "steadfast and ready" to intervene through established diplomatic channels whenever a citizen's well-being is at stake.
