India and Ecuador Chart a New Course for Strategic Cooperation
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. जयशंकर meets Ecuador's Gabriela Sommerfeld to boost trade, health, and digital cooperation in New Delhi.
New Delhi : In a significant move to bolster trans-continental ties, India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, hosted his Ecuadorian counterpart, Gabriela Sommerfeld Rosero, in New Delhi. This marks the Foreign Minister's inaugural visit to India, signaling a revitalized era of cooperation between the two nations across diverse sectors.
Key Highlights of the Bilateral Meet
The discussions focused on a broad spectrum of mutual interests, aimed at transforming traditional cordiality into a robust economic and technological partnership:
Developmental Synergy: Both nations signed a pivotal agreement on funding for 'Quick Impact Projects' (QIPs), designed to deliver immediate results in community development.
Global Alliances: Dr. Jaishankar welcomed Ecuador’s decision to join the India-led International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA).
Digital Innovation: Ecuador expressed keen interest in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), specifically the UPI payment system, to modernize its financial landscape.
Sectoral Growth: Deliberations covered enhanced collaboration in Healthcare, Agriculture, Trade, and Capacity Building.
Deepening Economic Footprints
The relationship has seen a steady upward trajectory, underscored by the opening of a Resident Indian Embassy in Quito in November 2025. Current talks are progressing toward a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), facilitated by the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO).
Before the high-level meetings, Minister Rosero paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. Her three-day itinerary also includes consultations with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, highlighting the multi-dimensional nature of this growing partnership.
This visit reaffirms that for India, Ecuador is not just a distant South American neighbor, but a key partner in the "Global South" narrative of shared growth and sustainable development.
