Devastating Monsoon Leaves Himachal Battling ₹1,168 Crore Damage and Road Blockades
Severe monsoon rains in Himachal Pradesh cause ₹1,168 crore in damages, leading to 237 deaths and leaving nearly 100 roads blocked despite easing rainfall.
Shimla : Even as the intensity of the monsoon begins to recede across Himachal Pradesh, the trail of destruction left by recent torrential downpours continues to cripple normal life. While improving weather offers a glimmer of hope, the state administration faces a monumental challenge in restoring basic infrastructure—including road networks, power supply, and potable water.
According to the latest state reports, 98 key roads remain entirely blocked due to landslides and land subsidence. Essential services continue to suffer, with electricity supply snapped at 5 locations and drinking water systems damaged across 20 sites.
Since June 30, monsoon-related incidents have inflicted severe financial distress on the state, with total estimated damages surpassing ₹1,168 crore. The heavy rain has torn through crucial public infrastructure, tearing apart highways, disrupting power grids, and destroying pipelines, leaving thousands of residents struggling to access basic daily necessities.
Beyond the massive economic setback, the human toll has been tragic. A total of 237 people have lost their lives during this monsoon season. Out of these casualties, 98 deaths were directly triggered by natural disasters like flash floods and landslides, while 139 fatalities occurred due to rain-related road accidents on treacherous mountain paths.
With rain activity subsiding, relief and restoration operations are finally gaining momentum. Authorities have prioritized clearing the 98 closed roads, restoring local power networks, and rebuilding water pipelines to reconnect isolated communities. While the slowing down of the monsoon brings immediate relief, the sheer scale of the financial loss and human tragedy will require months of dedicated recovery efforts to heal Himachal's deep wounds.
