Ganga Expressway : CM Yogi Announces 15-Day Free Ride on India’s Newest Corridor
UP CM Yogi आदित्यनाथ announces 15 days of toll-free travel on the 594km Ganga Expressway to celebrate its commercial launch.
Lucknow : In a significant move to celebrate the operational launch of Uttar Pradesh’s longest high-speed corridor, Chief Minister Yogi आदित्यनाथ has announced that the Ganga Expressway will remain toll-free for the first 15 days of its Commercial Operation Date (COD). This decision aims to allow citizens to experience the state-of-the-art infrastructure without any financial burden immediately following its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 29.
Immediate Implementation by UPEIDA
Following the Chief Minister’s directive, the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) has instructed the project concessionaires—IRB Infrastructure and Adani Infrastructure—to suspend all toll collection activities for the next fortnight. The decision was formalized after an independent engineer issued the provisional certificate under Article 14.3.1 of the Concession Agreement, officially marking the start of commercial operations.
A "Feel Good" Initiative for Citizens
Spanning a massive 594 kilometers, the Ganga Expressway connects Meerut to Prayagraj, passing through 12 districts. By offering a "free ride experience," the government intends to familiarize the public with the expressway’s superior quality, speed, and safety features.
While the project operates on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with a 27-year concession period, the state government or UPEIDA will compensate the developers for the revenue lost during this 15-day window, ensuring the transition remains seamless for the private partners.
Infrastructure Marvel and Strategic Features
- The Ganga Expressway is being hailed as a "game-changer" for the regional economy. Key highlights include:
- Emergency Airship: A 3.2 km dedicated airstrip in Shahjahanpur for Indian Air Force emergency landings.
- Advanced Safety: Equipped with an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), 24/7 CCTV surveillance, and emergency call boxes.
- Enhanced Connectivity: The 6-lane (expandable to 8) highway reduces travel time from Lucknow to Delhi to just 6 hours.
- Economic Impact: It links major hubs including Unnao, Hardoi, and Shahjahanpur directly to the National Capital and Purvanchal.
Despite the toll waiver, UPEIDA has assured that maintenance, patrolling, and ambulance services will operate at peak standards to ensure commuter safety during the initial rush.
