KANPUR REVOLUTIONIZES GANGA CLEANUP WITH DRONE SURVEYS AND ECO-FRIENDLY WETLANDS

Kanpur : In a major push to curb pollution in the sacred River Ganga, the Kanpur administration has accelerated efforts to tap and treat sewage discharge flowing from rural drains. Following an extensive drone survey that identified major pollution hotspots, officials are now drafting a comprehensive proposal to construct artificial wetlands at three strategic locations for natural water purification.

The initiative was highlighted during a monthly review meeting of the District Ganga Committee held at the Sarsaiya Ghat auditorium, chaired by District Magistrate and Committee Chairman Jitendra Pratap Singh. The meeting focused on assessing the real-time status of rural drains flagged during the drone mapping exercise conducted under the aegis of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG).

According to the District Panchayat Raj Officer (DPRO), the project is being executed in close coordination with both the urban and rural wings of the Jal Nigam. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the three selected wetland sites are currently being finalized. Once completed, these proposals will be submitted to the State Mission for Clean Ganga (SMCG) and the NMCG for final budget approval and resource allocation.

By leveraging drone technology and biological wetland treatment, local authorities aim to intercept untreated domestic runoff before it reaches the main riverbed. This eco-friendly tapping mechanism is expected to significantly reduce biological oxygen demand (BOD) levels, providing a sustainable, cost-effective blueprint for river rejuvenation across the region.
