Proposed Power Transmission Line Sparks Major Safety Concerns In Bir-Billing Paragliding Corridor

Himachal Pradesh: The world-famous paragliding hub of Bir-Billing is facing a major controversy following a proposal by the state power department to install a new 33 kV overhead high-voltage transmission line right through the primary paragliding flight corridor. The plan has triggered widespread anxiety and stiff opposition among local paragliding pilots, aero-sports associations, and tourism stakeholders who fear it will ruin the destination's safety reputation.

Aviators argue that placing high-tension wires directly beneath the takeoff and landing trajectories introduces an extreme hazard.

"Death Trap" for Paragliders and Cross-Country Pilots
Experienced tandem and solo pilots have warned that overhead power lines act as virtual invisible traps in shifting mountain winds. During thermal tracking or emergency landings, a minor miscalculation could lead to catastrophic mid-air entanglements.

"We have spent decades building Bir-Billing into an internationally acclaimed safe destination. Introducing overhead high-voltage infrastructure into the active flying zone completely defeats our ongoing demands to underground existing low-tension wires." - Bir-Billing Paragliding Association Member

Stakeholders Demand Alternative Route via Chauntra
The local economy of the region relies heavily on adventure tourism, sustainable homestays, and hospitality. Tourism operators point out that any compromise on safety protocols could lead to the cancellation of international pre-world cups and drive away wealthy foreign flyers, devastating local livelihoods.

Recognizing the gravity of the issue, Rajya Sabha MP and Bir-Billing Paragliding Association President Anurag Sharma stated that the matter is being taken up directly with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who also holds the power portfolio. The community is strictly demanding that the power department reroute the proposed transmission line via the alternative Chauntra route, ensuring that the pristine, obstruction-free skies of the paragliding corridor remain uncompromised.
