India Acts as ‘First Responder’ Again: 30 Tons of Emergency Aid Dispatched to Cyclone-Hit Madagascar
India sends 30 tons of humanitarian aid via C-17 to Madagascar following Cyclones Fitia and Gezani, reinforcing SAGAR vision.
Antananarivo / Santiago : Upholding its commitment to the 'Global South' and the 'SAGAR' (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision, India has dispatched over 30 tons of critical humanitarian assistance to Madagascar. The island nation is currently reeling from the catastrophic aftermath of tropical cyclones Fitia and Gezani, which triggered severe flooding across North-Western Madagascar.
An Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft landed in Antananarivo carrying a comprehensive relief package. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the consignment includes:
12 Tons of Medical Supplies: Life-saving drugs, surgical equipment, and essential medicines.
18 Tons of Disaster Relief Material: Tents, water storage tanks, dignity kits, and ready-to-eat meals.
MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted on 'X' that India stands in firm solidarity with the people of Madagascar. This timely intervention aims to provide immediate succor to displaced communities and support ongoing recovery efforts.
A Legacy of Solidarity
India’s role as a "Crisis Management Partner" for Madagascar is not new. The history of support includes:
Operation Vanilla (2020): The Indian Navy was the first to provide large-scale rescue operations after a devastating cyclone affected over 100,000 people.
COVID-19 Support: India supplied essential medicines and 600 tons of rice to ensure food security during the pandemic.
Agricultural Cooperation: Continuous technical support to boost Madagascar’s farming sector.
The Indian Embassy in Madagascar stated that this mission exemplifies the long-standing friendship and the South-South Cooperation framework championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
