Himachal Police Band Chief Suspended Over Unauthorized Social Media Music Monetization

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) : The Himachal Pradesh Police has suspended Inspector Vijay Kumar, the prominent face and in-charge of the state’s celebrated police orchestra, "Harmony of the Pines," following allegations of unauthorized commercial activity.

The suspension, effective immediately, stems from claims that the inspector monetized private music content on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram without securing mandatory departmental permission.  The disciplinary action follows an unsatisfactory response to a show-cause notice issued by the office of Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Tewari. Inspector Kumar had been asked to provide evidence of prior authorization for his private musical ventures and to disclose all income generated from digital platforms.

Authorities found his July 3 reply lacking in both documentary proof and financial transparency, viewing his actions as a violation of Rule 14.33 of the Punjab Police Rules and sections of the Himachal Pradesh Police Act, 2007.  A departmental inquiry, headed by DSP Kamal Kishore, has been ordered to conclude within three months. During this period, Inspector Kumar has been stationed at the 1st HPAP Battalion in Junga.  

"Harmony of the Pines," established in 1996, rose to national fame in 2022 after appearing on the reality show Hunarbaaz. While the orchestra serves as a cultural symbol for the state, the current police leadership has emphasized that strict adherence to service conduct rules remains mandatory for all personnel, regardless of their public profile. This suspension marks the latest in a series of disciplinary actions within the force, triggering a wider debate regarding the consistency of rules governing social media usage by government officials.
