Kanpur Medical College Empowers 500+ Women with Breast Self-Examination Skills

Kanpur : In a significant move to combat the rising cases of breast cancer, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at GSVM Medical College organized a specialized awareness initiative titled "Aao Dekho Sikhe" (Come, See, Learn) on World Cancer Day. The program focused on practical training, benefiting over 500 women.

The Crisis of Late Diagnosis Dr. Renu Gupta, Head of the Gynecology Department, highlighted a staggering statistic: India records nearly 200,000 new breast cancer cases annually. However, the tragedy lies in the timing. "Approximately 50–60% of women seek medical help only when the disease has reached its final stages," Dr. Gupta noted.

The Power of Self-Examination The core message of the event was that breast cancer is not a death sentence if caught early. Experts pointed out that the survival rate is as high as 90% when the cancer is detected in its initial phases.

During the workshop, a dedicated team of faculty members, including Dr. Seema Dwivedi, Dr. Garima Gupta, and Dr. Karishma Sharma, provided hands-on training on Breast Self-Examination (BSE). They demonstrated how women can identify subtle changes or lumps through regular monthly checks at home.

A Collaborative Effort The faculty, including Dr. Pragya, Dr. Pratima, Dr. Rashmi Gupta, and Dr. Neelu, engaged in interactive Q&A sessions to clear myths and encourage women to overcome hesitation. The event concluded with the reminder that in the fight against cancer, awareness is the most potent medicine available.
