Medanta Lucknow Achieves 100 Successful Bone Marrow Transplants

Lucknow : Medanta Cancer Institute, Lucknow's Department of Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant has successfully completed 100 bone marrow transplants, marking a significant milestone in the treatment of blood disorders and blood cancers. The department performed its first bone marrow transplant three years ago. Today, this achievement stands as a symbol of hope for patients and families who have battled life-threatening blood diseases and blood cancers.

Dr. Anshul Gupta, Director, Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant, Medanta Hospital, Lucknow, said, "When we performed our first bone marrow transplant, we had a small but dedicated team committed to providing the best possible care to our patients. Completing 100 successful transplants is a significant milestone for us. It is not just a number—it represents 100 families who endured one of the most difficult phases of their lives and have now returned to leading normal, healthy lives."

He further added that every successful bone marrow transplant is the result of the collective dedication of doctors, nurses, laboratory specialists, donors, and patients' families. Many donors also come forward to help complete strangers, giving them a second chance at life through the gift of stem cell donation.

Recalling one of the department's earliest success stories, Dr. Gupta shared that three years ago, a 16-year-old girl was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a form of blood cancer. Chemotherapy alone was not sufficient to treat her condition, and she required a bone marrow transplant to restore her blood-forming and immune systems. Her father became a half-matched (haploidentical) donor, making the life-saving transplant possible.

Following the transplant, the patient remained in isolation for nearly two months. During the third week of treatment, she developed a serious infection, making her condition particularly challenging. However, with continuous monitoring and timely medical intervention, the medical team successfully managed the complications. After nearly 60 days, her blood counts stabilised and her health gradually improved.
