Jalori Pass Leads Himachal’s Sustainable Tourism Drive with Community-Centric Conservation Model

Jalori (Himachal Pradesh) : In a transformative shift for Himachal Pradesh’s tourism landscape, the Jalori Pass in the Kullu district has emerged as a beacon of sustainable development. By moving beyond traditional tourism, the local Forest Department, in collaboration with the Local Area Development Authority (LADA), has established a community-based eco-tourism model that prioritizes environmental preservation while fostering local economic resilience.

The heart of this initiative lies in the creation of 11 eco-huts, which serve as the foundation for a circular economy. Seven of these huts are managed by local residents to provide authentic hospitality, while others are dedicated to vital services, including a Nature Interpretation and Service Centre, a retail space for women’s self-help groups, and emergency transit facilities.

This model ensures that tourism revenue directly benefits the community, empowering rural families and women’s collectives.  Environmental stewardship is deeply embedded in the site’s operations. Local eco-tourism societies actively manage cleanliness, waste collection, and the promotion of responsible visitor behavior, ensuring the area’s delicate alpine ecosystem remains protected.

These groups encourage visitors to follow "Leave No Trace" principles, emphasizing the protection of sacred sites like Serolsar Lake and the surrounding deodar forests.  As the region faces increasing pressure from mass tourism, the Jalori model demonstrates that successful mountain tourism requires local partnership rather than passive observation. By linking local livelihoods with nature conservation, the initiative provides an inspiring, scalable blueprint for other Himalayan destinations striving to balance the pursuit of prosperity with the urgent need to safeguard their natural heritage.
