Durgesh Aranya: Himachal’s Wildlife Marvel Set To Redefine Sustainable Conservation Tourism

Kangra (Himachal Pradesh) :  Nestled in the lush Shivalik foothills of Bankhandi, Kangra, the Durgesh Aranya International Zoological Park is emerging as a landmark project for India’s wildlife conservation. Conceived by the Himachal Pradesh government, this ambitious greenfield venture aims to transcend the traditional zoo model by seamlessly integrating conservation, scientific research, and immersive eco-tourism within a natural landscape.

Spanning over 233 hectares, the park is designed with a strong focus on ecological preservation, with approximately 70% of the area maintained as natural green habitat. This ensures that wildlife can thrive in environments closely resembling their native ecosystems. The project is historic in its commitment to sustainability, holding the distinction of being India's first zoological park to receive certification from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). This accreditation underscores the use of energy-efficient designs, extensive water conservation through check dams and rainwater harvesting, and smart infrastructure.

The park will serve as a sanctuary for over 160 species, with a primary focus on indigenous Himalayan fauna. Visitors can look forward to spacious, naturalistic enclosures—rather than conventional cages—that feature unique attractions such as a nocturnal house for elusive feline species, a wetland aviary, and dedicated safari zones for lions and tigers. Beyond animal exhibits, the park will host educational centers, rescue and rehabilitation facilities, and adventure activities like rock climbing and boating, making it a holistic destination for nature enthusiasts.

With an estimated total outlay of ₹619 crore, the project is a cornerstone of the state’s strategy to establish Kangra as the "Tourism Capital" of Himachal Pradesh. By generating local employment and boosting the hospitality sector, Durgesh Aranya is set to become both a living classroom for future generations and a premier destination for travelers, with the first phase targeted for completion by 2027.
