Heavy Monsoon Rains Lash Delhi National Capital Region Triggering Emergency Weather Red Alert
Heavy monsoon rains lash Delhi-NCR, prompting the IMD to issue an emergency red alert for severe regional thunderstorms and waterlogging.
New Delhi : Persistent heavy downpours lashed the national capital region, covering Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad, as the Southwest Monsoon made its official arrival across northern India. The intense wet spell brought immediate respite from prolonged hot and humid conditions but triggered widespread waterlogging, severe traffic congestion, and minor infrastructural disruptions across major transit corridors.
Responding to the rapid change in atmospheric conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its weather warning to a critical red alert for the entire National Capital Region (NCR). The weather bureau warned of intense thunderstorm activity, continuous lightning, and squally surface winds shifting between 60 to 80 kilometers per hour, with localized gusts temporarily peaking near 100 kilometers per hour.
The heavy rainfall caused water to accumulate rapidly on prominent arterial roads, slow-moving traffic on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, and low-lying residential sectors in Noida and Ghaziabad. Regional municipal corporations deployed emergency pumping units to clear waterlogged junctions, while the traffic police issued commuter advisories urging citizens to avoid heavily flooded underpasses. Indira Gandhi International Airport authorities noted that while flight schedules remained largely stable, passengers should check with airlines for weather-induced delays.
According to senior IMD meteorologist Naresh Yadav, the monsoon advanced rapidly after a brief delay, marking its arrival in the capital slightly later than its usual June date. However, the current system is drawing robust moisture from the Arabian Sea, promising sustained precipitation. The weather department’s extended forecast indicates that Delhi-NCR will continue to experience moderate to heavy cyclical rain spells alongside thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures are expected to plummet by five to seven degrees Celsius, keeping the regional climate significantly cooler as the core monsoon grid establishes its presence across neighboring Punjab and Haryana.
