Himalayan Tourist Footfall Registers Massive Growth To Reach Forty Crore Visitors Union Ministry Reports

New Delhi : Tourist arrivals across the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) witnessed an extraordinary growth surge over the past decade, increasing from 10.55 crore in 2014 to 40.78 crore in 2025. The 286 per cent jump highlights expanding domestic mobility, improved regional infrastructure, and growing interest in mountain destinations.

Addressing the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Tourism Indra Hang Subba presented the statistics, noting that the substantial increase in visitor numbers has generated broader employment and local economic opportunities across mountain communities. The Indian Himalayan Region spans 13 states and Union Territories, covering approximately 5.33 lakh square kilometers across key destinations including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Ladakh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh.

While the growth has delivered significant financial benefits to local hospitality, transport, and homestay sectors, government agencies acknowledge the environmental pressures accompanying mass tourism. Fragile high-altitude ecosystems are facing heightened strain regarding solid waste management, drinking water availability, and traffic congestion during peak seasons.

To mitigate these ecological risks, several hill states are implementing targeted sustainability frameworks. Himachal Pradesh has revised its Eco-Tourism Policy alongside carrying capacity assessments in fragile spots such as the Manali Wildlife Sanctuary. Similarly, Uttarakhand is prioritizing clean-energy transport, continuous environmental monitoring, and sustainable wastewater practices.

The Ministry of Tourism highlighted that central schemes such as Swadesh Darshan 2.0 and PRASHAD are driving sustainable destination development. Officials emphasized that future initiatives will focus on promoting zero-waste models, decentralized community homestays, and year-round responsible tourism to balance regional economic development with environmental conservation.
