Southwest Monsoon Officially Arrives In Delhi National Capital Region Breaking Five Year Record
The Southwest Monsoon officially hits Delhi-NCR five days behind schedule, marking the region's latest onset since the 2021 rainy season.
New Delhi : Ending weeks of oppressive heat and sticky humidity, the Southwest Monsoon officially arrived in the national capital region, marking its latest onset in five years. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the monsoon advanced across the entire National Capital Territory of Delhi, bringing widespread rain showers and a sharp, much-needed drop in daytime temperatures.
The seasonal system arrived five days after its normal onset baseline date of June 27. According to historical IMD tracking archives data, this is the first time since 2021 that the monsoon has breached the capital during the month of July.
Over the last five consecutive cycles, the monsoon consistently arrived earlier: hitting on June 29 last year, June 28 in 2024, June 25 in 2023, and June 30 in 2022. The 2021 season holds the historical delay benchmark, when the rainy system stayed away until July 13.
Meteorologists attributed the extended delay to the lack of a robust low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which allowed dry westerly winds from Pakistan to dominate the regional atmosphere. This unusual pattern recently caused Delhi's peak power demand to climb to an all-time record high of 8,748 MW as residents battled extreme "feels-like" heat indexes exceeding 50 degrees Celsius.
The weather office has placed Delhi-NCR under a yellow alert, forecasting generally cloudy skies, moderate to heavy rainfall spells, and gusty winds shifting up to 50 kilometers per hour.
Long-term atmospheric models indicate that monsoon activity will remain highly active across northwestern India over the coming week due to a favorable seasonal trough line running from Punjab to the Bay of Bengal. Residents can expect cyclical thunderstorms daily, which will push minimum temperatures down to a comfortable 23 to 24 degrees Celsius.
