Delhi's Britannia Chowk Renamed to Honor Journalist Ashwini Chopra
Delhi’s iconic Britannia Chowk has been officially renamed after veteran journalist Ashwini Chopra, with Rajat Sharma visiting his family.
New Delhi: In a significant tribute to fearless journalism and public service, the Delhi Government has officially renamed the capital's busy and prominent Britannia Chowk as "Ashwini Minna Chowk." The renaming honors the legacy of the late Ashwini Kumar Chopra (popularly known as Minna), who was the resident editor of Punjab Kesari (Delhi edition), a former Member of Parliament, and a dedicated ex-Ranji cricketer.
Following the official announcement, senior journalist and India TV Chairman Rajat Sharma visited the residence of the late editor to meet his family members, including his wife, Kiran Chopra. Sharing his thoughts on the occasion, Sharma recalled Ashwini Chopra’s immense contribution to Indian journalism and his unwavering dedication to truth, even during the most challenging socio-political climates in the country.
Ashwini Chopra belonged to a legendary lineage of journalists who paid the ultimate price for truth. During the height of the Punjab insurgency, both his grandfather, Lala Jagat Narain, and his father, Ramesh Chander, were assassinated for their fierce, unapologetic writing against terrorism. Carrying that mantle forward, Ashwini Chopra refused to be intimidated, keeping the torch of brave journalism burning bright while later serving the citizens of Karnal as their elected MP.
The renaming of the massive intersection, through which thousands of commuters pass daily, stands as a permanent marker of his contribution to the nation. Family members and colleagues from the media fraternity expressed their deep gratitude for the gesture, stating that it ensures his legacy of courage remains alive in the heart of the national capital.
