Expert Guide: Protecting Your Pets from Heatstroke and Dehydration This Summer

Lucknow : As temperatures soar, pet owners must become increasingly vigilant. Dogs and cats are highly susceptible to heatstroke (hyperthermia) and dehydration, which can become life-threatening within minutes. To ensure the safety of our furry companions, Dr. Ashish Singh from Bhola Pets Hospital (Para, Lucknow) has shared essential management strategies for the summer season.

Hydration is Priority
The most critical step is ensuring constant access to cool, fresh water. For pets that are highly active or showing signs of lethargy, Dr. Singh recommends adding electrolytes to their water, though only after consulting a qualified veterinarian.

Dietary Adjustments
Heavy meals can increase metabolic heat. Instead, opt for light, easily digestible food. Increasing the ratio of liquid or wet food in their diet can also help maintain internal moisture levels.

Safe Shelter and Environment
Pets should be kept indoors in shaded, well-ventilated rooms. A common but fatal mistake is leaving pets in parked cars; even with windows cracked, temperatures inside a vehicle can reach dangerous levels almost instantly. Furthermore, never tie a pet outside in direct sunlight.

Smart Exercise Routines
Avoid walking your dogs during peak daylight hours. The pavement can burn their paw pads, and the humid air can trigger respiratory distress. Limit outdoor activities to the early morning or late evening when the ground and air are significantly cooler.

Grooming and Medical Attention
For long-haired breeds, a summer trim can help regulate body temperature, though one should never shave down to the skin as the coat also provides protection against sunburn.

"Prevention is always better than cure," says Dr. Ashish Singh. "If you notice heavy panting, glazed eyes, or vomiting, contact your nearest veterinarian immediately."

By following these simple steps, you can ensure your pets remain happy, healthy, and hydrated throughout the sweltering summer months.
