Hollywood to launch India’s First Female Spy: The Incredible Neera Arya
Hollywood firm announces ₹200cr biopic on Neira Arya, India’s first female spy who killed her husband to save Netaji.
Baghpat : The extraordinary life of Neira Arya—the fearless soldier of the Indian National Army (INA) and India’s first female spy—is set to take center stage on the global silver screen. US-based production house Arbana Illinois has announced a high-budget cinematic venture dedicated to the "Daughter of Baghpat," with an estimated investment of ₹200 crore.
The project reached a significant milestone recently as a specialized film production team from Hyderabad visited the Neira Arya Research Institute in Khekra, Baghpat. Directors Ajay Pulapati, Mandala Rajkumar, and Jarpulla Linga Swami conducted an exhaustive study of documents, personal artifacts, and historical sites associated with the revolutionary hero.
Unearthing Lost History in London Archives
Director Ajay Pulapati revealed that the film is the result of deep historical excavation. The team sifted through tons of British-era documents transported to London before 1947. Their research uncovered specific records confirming that Arya was captured by Brigadier J.A. Salomons and subsequently incarcerated in the notorious Cellular Jail (Kala Pani).
The narrative will shed light on the harrowing experiences of the Rani Jhansi Regiment after the British recaptured the Andaman Islands in 1945. The film aims to expose the systemic exploitation and inhuman torture these women endured until India gained independence.
A Life Defined by Sacrifice: From Khekra to the INA
Neira Arya’s journey is one of immense personal tragedy and unparalleled patriotism. Born in Khekra, she was orphaned at a young age and later adopted by Seth Chhajju Mal, a wealthy businessman from Calcutta.
Her life took a dramatic turn after her marriage to Jai Ranjan, a British Army intelligence officer. In a staggering conflict of interest and loyalty, Jai Ranjan was tasked with assassinating Subhash Chandra Bose. Neira, who had clandestinely joined the INA’s Rani Jhansi Regiment, discovered her husband’s mission.
In a moment that defined her legacy, Neira chose her country over her marriage. When Jai Ranjan attempted to infiltrate Netaji’s camp to execute the assassination, Neira intercepted him, killing her own husband with a bayonet to protect the Supreme Commander.
The 'Naagin' of the Revolution
Recognizing her ultimate sacrifice, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose bestowed upon her the title of 'Naagin' and inducted her into the INA’s elite intelligence wing. Her defiance eventually led to her arrest by the nephew of King George V, sent specifically from London to capture her.
The film will graphically depict the "inhuman atrocities" she faced in Kala Pani, including a chilling historical account where British jailers used a blunt cutter to mutilate her breast in an attempt to break her spirit.
Global Release and Local Heritage
The film will be shot across various international locations, but significant portions will be filmed in Khekra, capturing Neira's final visit to her birthplace and her poignant meeting with local residents. The production will be released globally in Hindi, English, and multiple international languages, finally giving India’s "First Female Spy" the global recognition she was denied for decades.
