Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 : Registration start's for Commences via Lipulekh and Nathu La

Pithoragarh : The spiritual call of the Himalayas resonates once again as the registration process for the prestigious Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 officially launched today, April 30. Pilgrims seeking to visit the abode of Lord Shiva have until May 19 to submit their applications. As the gateway to this divine journey, the Pithoragarh district administration has shifted into high gear to ensure a seamless experience for the thousands of devotees expected this season.

The 2026 Itinerary: Two Routes, One Divine Destination

  • According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the pilgrimage will continue to operate through its two traditional corridors:
  • The Lipulekh Pass (Uttarakhand): 10 batches of 50 pilgrims each (Total: 500).
  • The Nathu La Pass (Sikkim): 10 batches of 50 pilgrims each (Total: 500).

A high-level meeting held in Delhi on April 27—attended by officials from the MEA, Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN), and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)—solidified the logistics for the Lipulekh route. Representing the local frontier, the SDM of Dharchula played a pivotal role in synchronizing state and central efforts.

How to Apply: The Digital Gateway
Aspiring pilgrims must navigate the official portal of the Ministry of External Affairs at https://kmy.gov.in. The registration process is strictly digital and involves several key steps:

  • Account Creation: Users must set up a fresh profile on the portal.
  • Documentation: Applicants are required to provide personal details and passport information.
  • Uploads: A scanned copy of the passport, recent photographs, and specific mandatory documents must be uploaded before final submission.

To ensure transparency and fairness, the selection of pilgrims is conducted through a computerized draw. This automated system eliminates manual intervention. Once the draw is finalized, selected candidates will receive official notifications via SMS and Email to proceed with medical screenings and further formalities.

Logistics and Route Transformation
Pithoragarh District Magistrate, Ashish Bhatgai, confirmed that the Yatra is scheduled to commence in the first week of June. While the spiritual essence remains ancient, the physical journey has seen a massive infrastructure overhaul.

Historically, pilgrims traveled via Haldwani and Almora. However, the 2026 route remains redirected through Tanakpur and Champawat. The itinerary follows a path from Delhi to Tanakpur, ascending through the scenic heights of Pithoragarh. After an overnight stay at Dharchula, pilgrims move by vehicle to Gunji. At Gunji, ITBP medical teams conduct rigorous health checks to ensure travelers can withstand the high-altitude environment.

The era of grueling 60-kilometer treks is largely over. Thanks to the newly constructed road reaching up to the Lipulekh Pass, the trek has been reduced to a mere 400-meter walk near the Chinese border. This development has significantly mitigated the risks associated with oxygen depletion and physical exhaustion that previously plagued the route.

Spiritual Milestones: Om Parvat and Beyond
The journey offers more than just the destination. Beyond Gunji, at Nabhidhang, pilgrims are treated to the majestic sight of Om Parvat, a natural snow phenomenon where the mountain peak mirrors the sacred "Om" symbol. From there, travelers cross the Lipulekh Pass into China, passing through Taklakot and Darchen before reaching the serene waters of Lake Mansarovar.

Kailash Mansarovar holds unparalleled significance as the physical manifestation of Mount Meru and the residence of Lord Shiva. It remains a focal point of faith for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains globally. While the route was closed following the 1962 conflict, its reopening under the MEA’s supervision has turned it into a symbol of both faith and diplomatic cooperation.

Adi Kailash Yatra: Set to Begin Tomorrow
Parallel to the international pilgrimage, the domestic Adi Kailash Yatra is set to begin tomorrow, May 1. The local administration has already processed 160 applications, with Inner Line Permits (ILP) already issued to 80 devotees.

DM Ashish Bhatgai emphasized that all safety measures are in place but urged travelers to stay updated on weather conditions. "The Inner Line Permits are being issued on a rolling basis. We are committed to a successful 2026 season and advise all pilgrims to prioritize their health and keep a close watch on meteorological reports before ascending," he stated.

As the first batches prepare to depart in June, the air in Pithoragarh is thick with anticipation. For many, the 2026 season represents a long-awaited opportunity to touch the "Roof of the World" and find spiritual solace in the silence of the trans-Himalayas.
