India’s QIP Initiative to Provide Clean Drinking Water to Tubalevu Village in Fiji
India signs an MoU for the Tubalevu water project in Fiji, fulfilling a 2025 promise to provide clean drinking water.
SUVA: In a significant stride toward strengthening the development partnership between India and Fiji, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed for the Tubalevu Village Ground Water Supply Project. This initiative, launched under the Government of India’s Quick Impact Projects (QIP) framework, aims to resolve long-standing water accessibility challenges for the local community.
The signing ceremony took place in the presence of the High Commissioner of India to Fiji, Sunit Mehta, representatives from Fiji’s Ministry of Public Works, and Tubalevu village elders. Highlighting the diplomatic milestone on social media, the Indian High Commission noted that this project fulfills a key commitment made during the visit of Fiji’s Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, to India in August 2025.
The groundwater project is designed to deliver immediate, tangible benefits by providing safe and reliable drinking water directly to rural households. By focusing on community-level infrastructure, the project addresses both the quantity and quality of water, which are vital for the health and sanitation of the villagers.
This collaboration underscores India’s "Human-Centric Development" approach, which prioritizes the immediate needs of its partners in the Global South. Through such targeted, high-impact interventions, India continues to solidify its role as a reliable development partner, offering infrastructure support and capacity building without the burden of unsustainable debt. The Tubalevu project stands as a testament to the enduring friendship between the two nations and their shared vision for inclusive growth and sustainable development.
