Himachal CM Targets March-April 2027 Commissioning for 450 MW Shongtong-Karchham Hydro Project
Himachal CM Sukhu targets March-April 2027 for commissioning the 450 MW Shongtong-Karchham hydro project to boost state revenue.
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) : Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has issued clear directives to accelerate the construction of the 450 MW Shongtong-Karchham hydroelectric project in Kinnaur district, setting a firm target for commissioning by March-April 2027. Chairing a high-level review meeting of the Energy Department, the Chief Minister confirmed that approximately 80% of the powerhouse construction has already been completed.
To maintain momentum during the monsoon season, the government has implemented a strategic diversion plan for the Satluj River. Construction on the barrage will proceed by diverting the river flow through bays 4 and 5, while work on diversion bays 1, 2, and 3 will continue simultaneously. CM Sukhu emphasized that despite complex geographical and technical challenges, the government’s proactive interventions and site-specific engineering have ensured that the project remains on track.
Once fully operational, the project is projected to generate 1,579 million units of electricity annually, significantly strengthening Himachal Pradesh’s energy portfolio and grid stability. Furthermore, the state expects an annual contribution of nearly ₹900 crore to its economy from power generation and associated revenues.
CM Sukhu reiterated the state government's unwavering commitment to building robust clean energy infrastructure. He highlighted that the Shongtong-Karchham project is a critical component of Himachal’s vision for energy self-reliance and environmentally sustainable economic growth. With consistent monitoring and improved project planning, the administration aims to overcome past delays and successfully integrate this major asset into the state’s power grid by the 2027 deadline.
