Himachal CM Announces High Value Nut Mission to Drive Horticulture Growth and Profitability

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) : In a significant move to modernize the state's agricultural landscape, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced the launch of the High Value Nut Mission. Set to run from 2026 to 2031, this ambitious initiative aims to revitalize the horticulture sector by promoting the cultivation of temperate nut crops, including walnuts, almonds, apricots, and pine nuts (chilgoza).

The mission is strategically designed to overcome long-standing challenges such as ageing orchards, low productivity, and inadequate post-harvest infrastructure. By focusing on scientific intervention, the government plans to rejuvenate 900 hectares of old, low-yielding orchards through techniques like canopy management, soil health improvement, and the replacement of senile trees. Additionally, 100 hectares will be developed as model high-density plantations utilizing climate-resilient technologies and micro-irrigation.

"This mission will usher in a new phase of growth, diversification, and modernization," stated Chief Minister Sukhu. He emphasized that by integrating modern technology, quality planting material, and robust infrastructure, the government aims to significantly enhance farm productivity and profitability. The plan includes the establishment of four hi-tech nurseries and two Centres of Excellence to provide farmers with continuous research, training, and disease-free saplings.

To ensure sustainable market competitiveness, the mission will set up 10 modern units for grading, sorting, packaging, and value addition, effectively reducing post-harvest losses. Furthermore, the government will prioritize the conservation of chilgoza in tribal regions and extend support to Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and women-led agricultural groups. By fostering private investment and better market linkages, this initiative is expected to strengthen the rural economy and create valuable employment opportunities for the state’s youth.
