PM Modi announces 'India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership' after meeting with Giorgia Meloni

New Delhi : Elevating bilateral ties to a historic high, the Prime Ministers of India and Italy have formally announced the upgrading of their relationship to a 'Special Strategic Partnership.' The announcement followed a high-level bilateral meeting held at a historic villa in Rome, marking the final leg of a five-nation European tour.

A major economic takeaway from the summit is an ambitious blueprint to rapidly expand bilateral commerce, with both nations committing to a targeted trade volume of 20 billion euros by 2029. This growth is set to be catalyzed by fast-tracking agreements within the framework of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement. To maintain high-level momentum, a new oversight mechanism led by both Foreign Ministers has been established to systematically monitor and implement their Joint Strategic Action Plan.

Beyond economic targets, the two nations firmed up a defense industrial roadmap focused on the co-design, co-development, and co-production of military hardware. Technological convergence emerged as a focal point, with both leaders advocating for deeper joint frameworks in artificial intelligence, semiconductor supply chains, space exploration, and critical minerals. A dedicated memorandum of understanding was also signed to secure sustainable raw material supply lines.

"Bilateral ties between our nations have advanced significantly in sectors like trade, space, and technology," the Indian leader shared, commending the shared dedication to bringing the two nations closer. The meeting also concluded with a series of agreements to ease the mobility of professionals, including provisions for nursing recruitment, and labeled 2027 as the designated year of culture and tourism between the two democracies.India, Italy, Special Strategic Partnership, Bilateral Trade, Defense Industrial Roadmap, Rome Summit, Technology Cooperation, Critical Minerals, Geopolitics, International Relations
