Relentless monsoon downpour paralyzes Delhi-NCR as major roads turn into rivers

New Delhi: A fierce monsoon spell coupled with an intense weather system brought the entire Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) to a grinding halt. The persistent, heavy overnight downpour severely exposed the region's urban drainage flaws, submerging vital motorways, stalling vehicle fleets, and creating widespread chaos for morning commuters across satellite towns.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) quickly raised a high-level weather warning, declaring a 'Red Alert' for the national capital as primary observatories registered massive rainfall volumes within hours. Stretches like the Mehrauli-Badarpur (MB) Road experienced a total shutdown, with water levels rising rapidly and leaving several smaller cars partially submerged under water.

Severe inundation was similarly reported near the Akshardham Temple on National Highway 24 (NH-24), where slow-moving queues extending for miles paralyzed cross-border traffic moving between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

"The severe water accumulation along major underpasses and standard arterial roads has made routine commuting highly hazardous. Our relief machinery is working in shifts to restore normal highway operations," a senior traffic official stated.

The structural impact was felt deeply across South Delhi’s East of Kailash, where two massive, ancient trees collapsed on the main road within a short distance of each other, crushing luxury vehicles parked along the perimeter. Meanwhile, neighboring Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad faced comparable disruptions.

Severe logging along Gurugram’s Delhi-Jaipur Highway service lanes prompted corporate authorities to issue proactive work-from-home guidelines to minimize road congestion. Emergency drainage clearing squads are currently struggling to disperse the accumulated surface runoff as recurring heavy showers continue to hamper active civil mitigation efforts.
