Delhi Rains And Bad Weather Trigger Flight Diversions At IGI Airport
Heavy monsoon rains and strong winds disrupted operations at Delhi airport, forcing fifteen domestic and international flights to divert.
New Delhi: Heavy monsoon rains accompanied by fierce gusty winds and severely reduced visibility triggered major air traffic disruptions at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, forcing the diversion of at least 15 inbound flights to neighboring cities. According to airport officials, the diverted aircraft included ten domestic flights and five international operations.
The sudden shift in weather patterns made landing conditions unsafe in the national capital, compelling air traffic control to reroute twelve flights to Jaipur International Airport and three to Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow. Among the international flights severely affected were Air Astana from Almaty,
Thai Airways from Bangkok, Air India from Dubai, and an IndiGo flight arriving from Jeddah. Domestic routes from key metropolitan hubs, including Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad, also faced significant rerouting and subsequent cascading delays.
Flight-tracking data indicated that most diversions occurred during the peak midday hours before weather conditions stabilized sufficiently to allow safe landings. In response to the escalating crisis, major carriers including Air India, IndiGo, and Akasa Air issued urgent travel advisories.
The airlines acknowledged the network-wide impact and requested passenger cooperation while their ground teams worked to manage rescheduling and rebookings. Delhi airport authorities urged commuters to verify their flight statuses directly with airlines before departing for the terminal.
To bypass road traffic congestion caused by severe waterlogging across Delhi-NCR, the airport administration strongly recommended utilizing the Delhi Metro network. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that while temperature drops offered temporary respite from intense humidity, southeasterly winds gusting up to 37 kmph would likely maintain volatile atmospheric conditions over the region for the next 48 hours.
